Service 02 — Metal Balustrades & Handrails
Metal Balustrades and Handrails
We design, fabricate and install metal balustrades and handrails for main contractors and homeowners, on residential, commercial and education projects. We survey before we make, so the rails fit what has actually been built.

What we do
- Steel balustrades with flat bar, round bar, mesh or perforated infill
- Stainless steel handrails and balustrades, brushed or polished
- Aluminium balustrade systems for balconies and terraces
- Stair balustrades for feature, escape and spiral stairs
- Handrails for accessible routes, ramps and steps
- Juliet balcony and window guarding
Standards
Designed to Approved Document K and BS 6180, with Approved Document M followed on accessible routes.

Frequently asked questions
What handrail height is required on stairs?
Approved Document K generally calls for handrails between 900 mm and 1000 mm above the pitch line. Accessible stairs and ramps in non-domestic buildings also follow Approved Document M.
Which stainless steel grade should be used outside?
Grade 316 is usually specified outside, especially near the coast, roads or pools, because it resists corrosion better than grade 304. Grade 304 is common for internal work.
How big can the gaps in a balustrade be?
Where children may be present, including in homes, a 100 mm sphere should not pass through any opening. Guarding should also be hard to climb.
