## Gates and railings near the coast

Salt air speeds up corrosion. For coastal sites, hot-dip galvanising to BS EN ISO 1461 under a powder coat, or 316 stainless steel, lasts much longer than painted mild steel.

## Do you need planning permission?

Under permitted development, a gate, fence or wall can usually be up to 1 metre high next to a road used by vehicles, or 2 metres elsewhere. Listed buildings and some areas have restrictions, so check with your council first.
